\u201cFacebook wanted to be pipes, but it\u2019s also people\u00a0Early in the company\u2019s history, Zuckerberg referred to Facebook as a \u201cutility,\u201d a piece of \u201cinformation infrastructure.\u201d In a letter to potential shareholders in 2012, he compared the social network to the printing press and the television.\u00a0But television manufacturers and printing press makers have no reason to understand the difference between a historical photo and a piece of pornography, to consider how to classify photos of breastfeeding mothers, or to debate whether an exception should be made for Donald Trump\u2019s hate speech. They merely make the tools for distributing content.\u00a0Facebook, on the other hand, built both a content-distribution platform and a global community\u2014\u201dsocial infrastructure,\u201d as Zuckerberg more recently described it\u2014and its role in that community ended up being both toolmaker and governing institution. Facebook doesn\u2019t just enable communication, but sets the boundaries and rules around it. And its influence\u2014whether on culture, on elections, or on anything else beyond its own digital borders\u2014means that those decisions impact us all, whether or not we use Facebook\u201d<\/p>\n

Facebook erm\u00f6glicht nicht nur die Kommunikation, sondern legt auch die Grenzen und Regeln daf\u00fcr fest. Und sein Einfluss - ob auf die Kultur, auf Wahlen oder auf irgendetwas anderes jenseits seiner eigenen digitalen Grenzen - bedeutet, dass sich diese Entscheidungen auf uns alle auswirken, ob wir nun Facebook nutzen oder nicht.\"<\/p>\n
