\u201cGuy Standing\u2019s argument for a universal basic income (which he shared on the Forum\u2019s blog back in December) is based on a pretty simple but powerful idea: that no matter who we are \u2013 a Wall Street banker or a school janitor \u2013 we are all contributing to society, and therefore deserve a fair share of its wealth.\u00a0The danger, philosopher Michael Sandel argued in a session on the topic, is that others now understand this income as a form of compensation for those whose skills are being rendered obsolete by the digital revolution.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019d essentially be saying: \u2018We\u2019re going to pay you off in exchange for you accepting a world in which your contribution to the common good isn\u2019t really required, and what you do with your time, that\u2019s your business.\u2019 I think that would be corrosive,\u201d he argued.\u00a0That\u2019s because for most people, work is about so much more than just clocking in and picking up a pay check at the end of the month: our jobs are a fundamental part of our identity.<\/p>\n

\u201cWork is about more than making a living: it\u2019s also a source of meaning,\u201d<\/strong> Sandel said in another session. You take away that meaning and you end up with an understandably angry, frustrated group of people \u2013 rather like what we\u2019re starting to see across the world.\u201d<\/p>\n

\"O trabalho \u00e9 mais do que ganhar a vida: \u00e9 tamb\u00e9m uma fonte de significado\", disse Sandel noutra sess\u00e3o. Se lhe retirarmos esse significado, acabamos por ter um grupo de pessoas compreensivelmente zangadas e frustradas - um pouco \u00e0 semelhan\u00e7a do que estamos a come\u00e7ar a ver em todo o mundo\".<\/p>\n
