\u201cwe should acknowledge that the psychology of our minds work in specific, predictable and persuadable ways with \u201cbig holes waiting for things to pop in.\u201d This presents a kind of existential problem because all of us are trapped inside the same psychological architecture and vulnerable to the techniques of persuasion.<\/p>\n

\u201c\u2026 persuasion is kind of like that. There is something that can subvert my architecture. I can\u2019t close the holes that are in my brain, they are just there for someone to exploit. The best I can do is to become aware of some of them, but then I don\u2019t want to walk around the world being just vigilant all the time of all the ways my buttons are being pressed.\u201d<\/p>\n

Tristan Harris says there\u2019s a whole industry dedicated to this \u201cdark art form\u201d that people are not aware of. Consider, for example, that many people, when asked about the rise of big data, are not really all that alarmed that their personal data is out there. The familiar response is: \u201cI\u2019ve got nothing to hide.\u201d But if they realized that this data is used to feed the attention economy and the underlying methods of persuasion that come with it they might be more concerned. What if this dedicated group of engineers develops a type of artificial intelligence that literally knows how to persuade you to do anything?\u201d<\/p>\n

Considere-se, por exemplo, que muitas pessoas, quando questionadas sobre o aumento dos grandes volumes de dados, n\u00e3o est\u00e3o assim t\u00e3o alarmadas com o facto de os seus dados pessoais andarem por a\u00ed. A resposta habitual \u00e9: \"N\u00e3o tenho nada a esconder\". Mas se se apercebessem de que estes dados s\u00e3o utilizados para alimentar a economia da aten\u00e7\u00e3o e os m\u00e9todos de persuas\u00e3o que lhe est\u00e3o subjacentes, talvez ficassem mais preocupadas. E se este grupo dedicado de engenheiros desenvolver um tipo de intelig\u00eancia artificial que sabe literalmente como persuadir-nos a fazer qualquer coisa?\"<\/p>\n
