Fast Company has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fastcompany.com\/90327859\/sidewalk-labs-built-this-free-app-for-people-watching\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a post<\/a> on it.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Open Sidewalk #3: The Accessible City [CC]\" width=\"1200\" height=\"675\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/tf4vBIpku2g?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>This is about\u00a0observing how people operate in public space. Researchers, equipped with the <a href=\"https:\/\/medium.com\/sidewalk-talk\/commonsource-app-9b26a6ded800\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Commonspace<\/a> App, would sit, watch, and track how people use elements of a public square or park, recording how many people sit on benches in the morning versus the afternoon, or frequent the area during different seasons.<\/p>\n<p><em>After signing into the app, you can create a new study\u2013like a stationary activity map that shows what people are doing in a public space, or a people moving count, which tracks how many people walk or bike through an area. The app uses your location and shows you a satellite image of the public area you\u2019re located within. By holding down your finger on the map, the app will register that you\u2019re adding another person, and you can add the demographic details of gender and age range.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>While Sidewalk Labs did explore using cameras and computer vision to make public life studies more efficient, the team ultimately decided against it. CommonSpace doesn\u2019t rely on invasive sensors to track how people are using public space because of privacy implications and the fact that sensors just\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/parkpeople.ca\/archives\/10207\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">aren\u2019t as good as humans<\/a>\u00a0when it comes to observing complex human behavior. Instead, CommonSpace provides an easier way for humans to record data, which can then be exported for analysis and visualization<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Despite the efforts of Sidewalk Labs to position their work as reimagining cities to improve the quality of lives of the citizens, a feeling of constant surveillance prevails with me. It is only a small step to add\u00a0cameras and computer vision. With our eyes wide open, we are &#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/futuristgerd.com\/2017\/08\/why-the-singularity-is-certain-to-happen-in-my-own-lifetime-and-why-it-matters-futuristhumanist-gerd-leonhard\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">gradually, then suddenly<\/a> &#8211; being tracked on every move we make.
