Protopia: Building the Good Future. Summary of my latest online keynote using NotebookLM;)

The future is not written—it’s a choice.

In this talk, I explore why, despite the current troubles, #thegoodfuture is entirely possible and how we can build it—step by step, painfully, but surely. #protopia not dystopia ‪@KevinKelly‬

From solving climate change to wrestling with the rise of artificial intelligence, the next ten years will bring more change than the last 100 years. Will we let technology dictate our destiny, or will we use wisdom, ethics, telos, and collaboration to shape a future worth living in?

We’re standing at the #forkintheroad. One path leads to dystopia—AI arms races, misinformation, climate chaos, and dehumanization. The other leads to Protopia—a future that gets better, not perfect, but more human, sustainable, and inclusive with every step.

The tools we need—AI, quantum computing, renewable energy, genome editing—are here, or imminent. But without global governance, purpose, and collaboration, they could also become our undoing #haltagi And this is not about left vs. right, doomers vs. boomers, or utopia vs. dystopia. It’s about human agency, imagination, and collective action. We must resist cognitive outsourcing, reclaim the narrative of the future, and invest as much in humanity as we do in technology.

The future does not just happen to us—it happens through us. Let’s choose wisely. Let’s feed the right wolf. Let’s build the **Good Future.

And here is: NotebookLM's flattering Summary:

“Futurist Gerd Leonhard presents a compelling vision for a “protopian” future, emphasizing a step-by-step approach to progress rather than an idealistic utopia or a bleak dystopia. He identifies climate change and artificial general intelligence (AGI) as the two most significant existential challenges, asserting that while technology offers solutions, human collaboration, ethical governance, and a redefined economic logic centered on “five Ps” (people, planet, purpose, peace, prosperity) are crucial.

Leonhard advocates for reclaiming the narrative of the future from purely technological or profit-driven interests, urging humanity to focus on developing wisdom and a positive “future mindset” to ensure technology serves human values rather than replacing them. He stresses that collective action, global consensus, and a shift from a “profit-only” mentality are vital for navigating exponential change and building a truly good future”
